The Bunya Mountains – a great destination for adventure lovers

If you love an adventurous, outdoors holiday experience, the Bunya Mountains is a great destination. This soaring mountain peak is located in a scenic and pristine area of southeast Queensland, and offers some of the best trekking and mountain biking trails around.

Trekking

With over 40km of walking tracks through the Bunya Mountains National Park and the scenic Russell Park, there’s something to suit every kind of hiker, depending on how far you’d like to go and what sights you’d like to see.

You’ll come across stunning views over the escarpment, pristine waterfalls, rock pools and creeks, grassy bald areas, rainforest scenery, open eucalypt forest and a huge variety of different types of vegetation and wildlife. Don’t be surprised if you come across friendly wallabies on the tracks, spectacular parrots and even an echidna or two.

There are plenty of different tracks to explore, which will keep you busy for days. The tracks range from easy strolls capable of being completed with children, to 10km hikes. The Scenic Circuit Track is a favourite with everyone, as it incorporates Festoon Falls, and Tim Shea Falls Pine Gorge Lookout, a giant strangle fig tree that you can walk through!

Don’t forget a hat, sunscreen, a water bottle and a snack if you’re going on one of the longer hikes. You’ll get plenty of spectacular photos too.

Mountain biking

The Bunya Mountains mountain bike trails are a brand new addition to the Bunya Mountains experience, opening in February of 2023. With kilometres of trails newly built through the pristine Russell Park area, mountain biking enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice. There are both easy and intermediate trails winding through thick, lush rainforest areas, with trails ranging from short and gentle to longer and more advanced.

The easier trails offer gentle gradients and smooth surfaces, marked by some obstacles, and are suitable for beginner cyclists with basic mountain bike skills, and off-road bikes. The intermediate trails will take between one-and-a-half to two hours to complete a loop, and contain moderate gradients, variable surfaces and obstacles (such as roots, logs and rocks). They may include steep sections, and are suitable only for skilled mountain bike riders with mountain bikes.

The temperature

And what makes it even better, is the fact that temperatures at the Bunya Mountains are a good 5 – 7 degrees lower than the surrounding lowlands. It’s perfect adventure weather, as

you can enjoy trekking or riding around the mountain in deliciously cooler temperatures – just what you need when you’re working up a sweat.
